The short answer

How we chose: we read the dark spot correctors Google’s top guides and Reddit users recommend, checked each against its current US ingredient list (the brand’s, or a US retailer’s or an archived page where the brand’s site could not be read), and compared the claims with the AAD, the FDA and the trials behind them. We did not test them on skin. Our method

52%

of the 245 dark spot products in Avina’s catalog list fragrance, an essential or scented oil, or a named scent allergen, though the AAD says a product that stings may darken spots. 27 list none of the common studied spot ingredients (niacinamide, tranexamic acid, azelaic, glycolic or kojic acid, arbutin, a retinoid, vitamin C, thiamidol, cysteamine or butylresorcinol). None lists hydroquinone, and none of our picks lists fragrance, an essential oil or a named scent allergen.

Why we picked it: Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum

Good Molecules prints the percentage of every ingredient, and the two that target spots sit near the top: niacinamide 4th and cetyl tranexamate mesylate 5th, which the brand says delivers tranexamic acid into the skin. Niacinamide beat a plain cream for spots in several trials, though most were run by Procter & Gamble (Hakozaki 2002, Kimball 2010); in an independent trial, 4% niacinamide came close to 4% hydroquinone after eight weeks, with fewer side effects (Navarrete-Solís 2011).

Reddit users call it a budget favorite for post-acne marks (2024), and Allure lists it as an affordable option (August 2025). The complaint: some saw no change (2026). Good Molecules says to use it morning and night.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum

  • We found no trial of cetyl tranexamate mesylate on its own.
  • Some Reddit users saw no change.

Why we picked it: The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

The AAD lists azelaic acid among the ingredients that fade dark spots, and it is the ingredient Reddit users recommended most for post-acne marks in the threads we read (2026, 2025). The best trial is of the 20% prescription cream: in 329 women with melasma it did as well as 4% hydroquinone over 24 weeks (Baliña 1991; a co-author is listed at Schering, which made the cream, in a later paper). We found no trial of 10%, the strength sold without a prescription.

The Ordinary says to apply it morning and evening and to patch test first, and lists retinoids, direct acids and vitamin C among the products not to use it with. Reddit users’ complaints are pilling under other products (2025) and, for some, burning and redness (2026).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

  • It can pill under other products.
  • Some Reddit users felt burning or redness.

Why we picked it: Paula's Choice Clinical Discoloration Repair Serum

In darker skin, irritation is one of the ways dark spots start: the AAD names irritating skin products as a trigger, says to choose fragrance-free products and to stop anything that stings, and a review of skin of color advises caution with every treatment so it does not darken the spots it is meant to fade (Davis 2010). This serum leaves out the usual irritants: no fragrance, no drying alcohol, no retinoid, no glycolic or salicylic acid. Paula's Choice says to start three times a week.

Glamour names it its best for dark skin tones (July 2026). Of the topical spot ingredients in a 2023 meta-analysis, tranexamic acid had the lowest irritation rate (0.8% of patients) (Chang 2023). It matched hydroquinone in a 100-person trial (Janney 2019), but in the one trial of tranexamic acid alone against its plain base, it did no better (Kanechorn 2012, 23 people). Paired with niacinamide, as in this serum, it did beat a plain cream in a small company-run trial (Lee 2014: 2% of each, 42 women).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Paula's Choice Clinical Discoloration Repair Serum

  • Slow: Paula's Choice says 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Glamour's testers found it sticky (July 2026).

Why we picked it: EADEM The Mark Advanced Dark Spot Concentrate

Forbes Vetted names it its best overall dark spot corrector (September 2026) and InStyle its best for quick results (August 2026). EADEM sells it for spots rather than the whole face, with a precision applicator, up to twice a day, and three times a week to start for sensitive skin.

EADEM says it showed visible results in as little as two weeks in its own clinical evaluation; that is the brand’s study. Its kojic acid comes as kojic dipalmitate, a form that blends into oils, and the iron oxide at the end gives it a tint.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: EADEM The Mark Advanced Dark Spot Concentrate

Why we picked it: Vichy LiftActiv B3 Serum for Dark Spots

Melasyl is L’Oréal’s own pigment ingredient (its label name is 2-mercaptonicotinoyl glycine). Its best-known serum, La Roche-Posay’s Mela B3, is a pick in six of the guides we read, but its US list ends with fragrance (last of 32; see what the guides miss). Vichy, from the same group, sells Melasyl and niacinamide without it, and says the serum is fragrance-free and alcohol-free.

The glycolic acid is what makes it a dark spot and fine line serum: the AAD lists glycolic acid among the ingredients that fade spots. Vichy says to use it twice a day, always with sunscreen in the morning, and not in the same routine as other exfoliating acids or retinol.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Vichy LiftActiv B3 Serum for Dark Spots

  • Glycolic acid can sting sensitive skin.
  • No percentages in the name: Vichy states them on its site.

Why we picked it: Topicals Faded Brightening + Clearing Serum

InStyle names it its best for melasma (August 2026). Reddit users were split, more for than against; their complaints include breakouts (2025). Older complaints about the smell date from the original formula, whose list in 2024 had ethylene brassylate, a musk scent ingredient (archived page); Topicals now sells only a version it calls odorless, whose list has none.

The catch with seven actives in one serum: most of them sit low on the list (azelaic acid 20th of 35, licorice last), and Topicals prints no percentages, so you cannot tell how much of each you get.

Reddit users were split: a review in r/AsianBeauty rated it 1 out of 10 as too harsh for dry, sensitive skin (2026), and one commenter saw no change in their spots. Its 10% niacinamide is twice the 4 to 5% most trials used.

It won Good Housekeeping’s dark spot serum test, which scored 1,276 tester survey responses (September 2026), and CNN Underscored (August 2026) and Oprah Daily, as its best for melasma (September 2026), list it too. SkinMedica calls its blend a 9% “LTN Complex” of lotus sprout extract, tranexamic acid and niacinamide, and says it is fragrance-free. Its list does include sclareolide (14th of 28), which the EU’s CosIng database lists as a masking, perfuming and skin-conditioning ingredient (CosIng).

The AAD names tranexamic acid for hard-to-treat melasma, as a pill or on the skin. Melasma comes back, so treat it as a long-term plan with daily sunscreen (AAD); a dermatologist can add prescription options.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: SkinMedica Even & Correct Advanced Brightening Treatment

  • Tacky and slow to absorb, say Good Housekeeping's testers (September 2026).
  • Our list is from an archived copy of SkinMedica's page (April 8, 2026).

Which dark spot is it?

The word covers three different things, and they respond differently. Reddit users say the same: in the threads we read, the advice depended on the spot more than on the product (sun spots, acne marks, melasma).

  • Post-acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Flat brown or gray marks where a pimple, cut or rash was, more common and longer-lasting in darker skin. Once the cause stops, a mark a few shades darker than your skin usually fades in 6 to 12 months; deeper ones can take years (AAD). This is where creams help most: azelaic acid, retinoids, niacinamide.
  • Sun spots, or age spots. Flat brown spots on skin that gets sun. The AAD says creams must be used once or twice a day for weeks or months, and that lasers and peels work faster. Prescription tretinoin lightened them in a 10-month trial (Rafal 1992); in a 200-person trial, Eucerin’s thiamidol did no better than a plain cream on sun spots and freckles (Lekhavat 2026).
  • Melasma. Brown or gray-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, nose or upper lip, most common in women with medium to dark skin. Treatment cannot make it go away forever, and it can come back (AAD); results take 3 to 12 months (AAD). Visible light worsens it, so the AAD advises a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide (AAD).

See a dermatologist first about any spot that is new, changing, itching or bleeding: what looks like an age spot could be skin cancer (AAD; the ABCDEs of melanoma).

What the trials show, ingredient by ingredient

Most trials of non-prescription spot ingredients are small, and many were run by the companies that sell them. In order of the evidence we found:

  • Tretinoin (prescription). The strongest trials against a plain cream: liver spots lighter in 83% against 29% over 10 months (Rafal 1992), and dark marks left by skin inflammation in Black patients lighter after 40 weeks, with irritation in half (Bulengo-Ransby 1993). Over-the-counter retinol has no trial for spots that we found, though the AAD lists retinoids among the faders.
  • Azelaic acid. 20% (prescription) matched 4% hydroquinone in 329 women with melasma (Baliña 1991). No trial of the 10% sold over the counter.
  • Thiamidol (Eucerin). Better than a plain cream on doctors’ melasma scores, though not on patients’ own ratings or color measurements, in a 200-person trial funded by Beiersdorf, which makes Eucerin, and no better on sun spots or freckles (Lekhavat 2026); in an independent trial it did about as well as 4% hydroquinone (Lima 2021).
  • Cysteamine (Cyspera). Better than placebo in trials with a co-author from Scientis Pharma (Mansouri 2015), but weaker than 4% hydroquinone in an independent one (Lima 2020).
  • Niacinamide. Better than a plain cream in trials run by Procter & Gamble (Hakozaki 2002, Kimball 2010), and close to 4% hydroquinone in a small independent one (Navarrete-Solís 2011).
  • Tranexamic acid. As good as hydroquinone in a 100-person trial (Janney 2019), but no better than its plain base in the one trial of tranexamic acid alone (Kanechorn 2012); paired with niacinamide, it beat a plain cream in a small company-run trial (Lee 2014). The least irritating of the topical options in a 2023 meta-analysis (Chang 2023).
  • Vitamin C, kojic acid, arbutin, licorice. Thin evidence: 5% vitamin C did worse than 4% hydroquinone in 16 women but with far fewer side effects (Espinal-Perez 2004), and the others were tested mostly in mixtures or small open studies.

Why none of the picks has hydroquinone

Hydroquinone was the standard dark spot cream for decades. Under the CARES Act, over-the-counter skin lighteners with it have been unapproved new drugs since September 23, 2020, and in 2022 the FDA sent warning letters to 12 companies still selling them (FDA). The FDA says there are no FDA-approved or legally marketed over-the-counter skin lighteners at all (FDA). On prescription, Tri-Luma, which combines 4% hydroquinone with tretinoin and a steroid, is the only FDA-approved hydroquinone drug, for short-term treatment of melasma, and its label says melasma usually comes back when you stop (Tri-Luma label).

So “hydroquinone-free” on a US corrector is no distinction: every legal one is. The real risk is imported creams: the FDA warns that some contain mercury, listed as mercurous chloride, calomel, mercuric, mercurio or Hg (FDA). Of the 245 dark spot products in our catalog, zero list hydroquinone and zero list mercury. A claim to change how much melanin skin makes is a drug claim (FDA); many cosmetic correctors word their claims as fading “the look of” dark spots.

Popular correctors whose labels don’t match the guides

None of the guides we read prints the ingredient list. The labels of their favorites show:

  • La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Dark Spot Serum: a pick in six guides, including Forbes Vetted’s best for sensitive skin (September 2026) and Oprah Daily’s best budget pick (September 2026). The US list ends with fragrance (last of 32) and the dye Red 33; Good Housekeeping’s testers called the scent floral (September 2026).
  • Eucerin Radiant Tone Dual Serum: “Fragrance-free: yes” in Allure’s melasma guide (August 2026). The list on Target has alcohol denat. 2nd and fragrance last of 31; Eucerin's own page shows a partial list without fragrance or thiamidol, its main ingredient. Reddit users who praise its results also complain about the scent (2026, 2026).
  • Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Retinol + Vitamin C Dark Spot Corrector: the usual budget pick, in six guides from October 2024 to August 2026 (CNN, InStyle, Byrdie, Glamour, People and Women’s Health). The list has fragrance (14th of 30), which Glamour (July 2026) does note. InStyle (August 2026) and Byrdie (May 2026) say to use it only at night, while a doctor quoted by CNN (August 2026) says it can go under sunscreen.
  • L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Melasyl Dark Spot Creamy Serum: Forbes Vetted’s best value (September 2026). The list has alcohol denat. (6th), fragrance (last of 36) and three dyes.
  • Differin Dark Spot Correcting Serum: Oprah Daily’s best for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (September 2026), which notes the fragrance. The list on Walgreens also has alcohol 2nd. Women’s Health lists Differin Gel’s key ingredients as retinol and niacinamide (October 2024); its active is adapalene.

How to use a dark spot corrector

  1. Sunscreen every morning, SPF 30 or higher, reapplied outdoors. For melasma or darker skin, a tinted one with iron oxide (AAD); in people with melasma, it added to the results of hydroquinone (Castanedo-Cázares 2014). See our tinted sunscreen picks.
  2. Patch test first, then start three times a week if the brand says so (Paula’s Choice does, and EADEM for sensitive skin).
  3. One new product at a time, so you know what helped or stung.
  4. Apply it to the whole area, not just the spot, unless it is a spot treatment like EADEM’s.
  5. Stop if it burns or stings: irritation can make spots darker (AAD).
  6. Give it 8 to 12 weeks before judging it; melasma takes 3 to 12 months (AAD).
  7. Don’t pick or scrub the spot, and keep treating the acne that causes marks.

What to check on a dark spot corrector label: six things

Cosmetic labels list ingredients by amount down to 1%, then in any order (21 CFR 701.3); our guide to reading an ingredient list explains the rest.

  • Which spot ingredient, and where. Look for niacinamide, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, a retinoid, vitamin C, kojic acid or arbutin in the top part of the list. 27 of the 245 dark spot products in our catalog list none of niacinamide, tranexamic acid, azelaic, glycolic or kojic acid, arbutin, a retinoid, vitamin C, thiamidol, cysteamine, butylresorcinol or hydroquinone.
  • A stated strength. Few put one in the name: 30 of 245. A brand that states its strengths on its site (Paula’s Choice, SkinCeuticals, Vichy, Anua) tells you more than one that says “potent”.
  • Fragrance and essential oils. 52% of the dark spot products in our catalog list fragrance, an essential or scented oil, or a named scent allergen. The AAD says a product that stings may darken spots.
  • No alcohol denat. near the top. Drying alcohol is second on several popular correctors (see what the guides miss).
  • “Hydroquinone-free” tells you nothing. No over-the-counter hydroquinone is legal in the US, so every corrector on a US shelf is hydroquinone-free (FDA).
  • Mercury under other names. The FDA warns that mercury in imported skin lighteners may be listed as mercurous chloride, calomel, mercuric, mercurio or Hg (FDA). None of the dark spot products in our catalog lists it.

How we picked, and why you can trust it

We started from the dark spot correctors recommended by 14 guides, most of them from Google’s top results (CNN Underscored, Forbes Vetted, InStyle, Oprah Daily, Good Housekeeping, Byrdie, Glamour, People, Allure (two guides), Women’s Health, Cosmopolitan, an esthetician’s blog and a dermatologist’s practice), and by Reddit users in about 60 threads, leaving out one that a promotional account had seeded. We read the current US ingredient list of 47 products, from the brand or, where its site could not be read, a US retailer or an archived copy of the brand’s page, and kept only formulas with no fragrance, essential oil, named scent allergen or drying alcohol. We then chose one for each need and checked every claim against the AAD, the FDA and the trials linked below. Cruelty-free status comes from the Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International directories, checked on October 10, 2026 (Topicals and EADEM on October 13, 2026). For sunscreen, see our tinted sunscreen picks; for a retinoid, our retinol picks.

  • Every ingredient position, count and fragrance or alcohol flag on a product card is generated from its US ingredient list, not typed by hand.
  • Every health claim links to its source, such as the AAD, the FDA, a Drug Facts label or a published study.
  • No brand pays, sends free products or buys ads to be on a list, and commission never decides a pick.
  • We did not test these on skin or run a panel, and we say so on every post.

Our full method explains what we check and why.

Questions people ask

What is the best dark spot corrector?

Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum for most people: niacinamide and a tranexamic acid form, each printed with its percentage, and no fragrance. For marks left by acne, The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%; to splurge, SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense.

What is the #1 dark spot remover?

No serum removes a dark spot; they fade some spots over weeks to months. What works depends on the spot: for post-acne marks, azelaic acid or niacinamide; for sun spots, prescription tretinoin or an in-office treatment; for melasma, prescription treatment and daily tinted sunscreen. Have a dermatologist check any spot that changes. For most people, our pick is Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum.

What is the best serum for dark spots?

Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum for most people. For several spot-fading ingredients in one bottle, Topicals Faded Brightening + Clearing Serum; for higher stated strengths, Anua Niacinamide 10 + TXA 4 Serum, which Anua states at 10% niacinamide and 4% tranexamic acid.

Do dark spot correctors really work?

Some ingredients have controlled trials behind them: niacinamide, thiamidol, cysteamine and, on prescription, tretinoin, hydroquinone and 20% azelaic acid. Most of those trials were small or run by the companies that sell them, and results take two to three months at the earliest, longer for melasma. None of them makes up for skipping sunscreen.

What fades dark spots the fastest?

In-office treatments such as lasers and peels work faster than creams, the AAD says, but cost more and carry more risk of side effects. At home, results take weeks to months; marks left by acne often fade on their own in 6 to 12 months once the acne stops.

Is there a dark spot cream that actually works?

On prescription, yes: hydroquinone (the FDA-approved Tri-Luma cream combines it with tretinoin and a steroid) and tretinoin have the strongest trials. Without a prescription, niacinamide, thiamidol and cysteamine have the most trial support, though most of it was paid for by the companies that sell them. Azelaic acid's best trial used the 20% prescription cream; we found none of the 10% sold over the counter.

What is the best dark spot corrector for Black skin?

Paula's Choice Clinical Discoloration Repair Serum: tranexamic acid and niacinamide with no fragrance, no retinoid and no glycolic or salicylic acid. In darker skin, irritation can cause more dark spots, so the AAD advises fragrance-free products and stopping anything that stings. For post-acne marks, azelaic acid is the other option.

What is the best dark spot corrector for melasma?

Melasma is best treated with a dermatologist: prescription hydroquinone, tretinoin or tranexamic acid pills, and a tinted sunscreen every day, because visible light worsens it. Alongside, SkinMedica Even & Correct Advanced Brightening Treatment or SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense. Melasma usually comes back, so expect to keep treating it.

What is the best dark spot corrector for sun spots and age spots?

Prescription tretinoin: it lightened liver spots in 83% of users against 29% on a plain cream over 10 months. Over-the-counter retinol has no trial for spots that we found (see our retinol picks). Lasers and peels work faster, the AAD says. Have a dermatologist look first: the AAD warns that what looks like an age spot could be skin cancer.

What is the best drugstore dark spot corrector?

Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum and The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% are the lowest-priced picks. The drugstore names the guides pick most, Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair and La Roche-Posay Mela B3, both list fragrance.

What is the best Korean dark spot serum?

Anua Niacinamide 10 + TXA 4 Serum: Anua states 10% niacinamide and 4% tranexamic acid, with no scented oils. Medicube's TXA serum lists rose flower oil and AXIS-Y's lists rosemary oil.

Is hydroquinone banned in the US?

Not banned, but prescription-only: since the CARES Act took effect for skin lighteners on September 23, 2020, no over-the-counter hydroquinone product can be legally sold, and the FDA sent warning letters to 12 companies in 2022. Tri-Luma is the only FDA-approved drug containing it.

How long does it take for a dark spot corrector to work?

Usually 8 to 12 weeks for a first change; the AAD says melasma treatment takes 3 to 12 months. Give one product that long before switching, and wear sunscreen every day, or new sun undoes the progress.

Should I use a dark spot corrector in the morning or at night?

Most of the picks can go on both: Good Molecules, The Ordinary, Paula's Choice, Vichy and SkinCeuticals all say morning and evening. Retinoids usually go on at night. In the morning, put sunscreen on last.

Can I use a dark spot corrector with retinol or vitamin C?

Check the label. The Ordinary lists retinoids and vitamin C among the products not to use with its azelaic acid, Vichy says not to use LiftActiv B3 in the same routine as retinol or other exfoliating acids, and Topicals says not to layer Faded directly with acids or retinoids. Add one product at a time, and if your skin stings, stop: irritation can make spots darker.

Is tranexamic acid better than niacinamide for dark spots?

Neither clearly: niacinamide has more trials against a plain cream, mostly from Procter & Gamble. Tranexamic acid matched hydroquinone in a 100-person trial, but did no better than its plain base in the one trial of it alone; paired with niacinamide, it beat a plain cream in a small company-run trial. Many serums combine them, including seven of our nine picks.

Can I use a dark spot corrector while pregnant?

Ask your doctor first. The AAD says not to use retinoids, prescription or over the counter, or hydroquinone while pregnant; ACOG advises against topical retinoids and lists azelaic acid and glycolic acid among the over-the-counter acne ingredients that can be used. Melasma from pregnancy usually fades after birth, ACOG says, though some women have patches for years.

Does sunscreen help dark spots?

It is the most important step: without it, sun brings spots back. For melasma and darker skin, the AAD recommends a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, which also blocks visible light; in a trial of people with melasma, an iron oxide sunscreen added to the results of hydroquinone.
