The short answer
- The best mineral sunscreen for most faces is Avène Mineral Multi-Defense Fluid SPF 50+: zinc oxide alone, no fragrance.
- For sensitive skin, Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30; at the drugstore, Neutrogena Sheer Zinc.
- For no white cast and dark spots, a tinted one: Colorescience Color Balm.
- Check the Active ingredients box: only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide means mineral. “Mineral” on the front is not proof.
- Use a teaspoon for the face and reapply every two hours outdoors.
How we chose: we read the Drug Facts boxes and ingredient lists of the 546 mineral-only sunscreens in Avina’s catalog and the ones Allure, other review sites and Reddit users recommend most, then compared the finalists line by line. We did not test them on skin. Our method
sunscreens in Avina’s catalog with “mineral”, “physical” or “zinc” in the name also list a chemical filter. Only 30% of the sunscreens we read are mineral-only.

- Very dry skin that wants a cream
Why we picked it: Avène Mineral Multi-Defense Fluid SPF 50+
The Drug Facts box lists one active, 12% zinc oxide, which makes this a mineral sunscreen in the sense the American Academy of Dermatology uses: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both, and nothing else. Dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin. The rest of this list includes emollients, niacinamide, glycerin, bisabolol and allantoin, with no fragrance.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Avène Mineral Multi-Defense Fluid SPF 50+
- No tint: some white cast is possible on deeper skin.
- A fluid, not a rich cream.

Why we picked it: Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30
It is a moisturizer first: after the zinc oxide, the list runs water, emollients, squalane and glycerin, then ceramides EOP, NG, NP, AS and AP. Nothing on it is there to scent it. In the largest mineral-sunscreen thread we read, a Reddit user says it is the only mineral sunscreen moisturizer that does not burn their face.
SPF 30 meets the AAD's minimum of SPF 30, and the AAD advises at least a teaspoon of sunscreen for the face.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30
- SPF 30, the minimum the AAD advises.
- Zinc-heavy: expect some white cast.

Why we picked it: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
The Drug Facts box prints 21.6% zinc oxide, the most of any pick here, and SPF 50. The inactive list is a plain sunscreen base of water, emollients, film formers and silicones, with glycerin; there are no scented extracts. Reddit users in the mineral thread name Neutrogena’s mineral sunscreens among their favorites.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
- More zinc can mean more white cast.
- A basic formula: no soothing extras.

Why we picked it: Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Face Drops SPF 50
Drops spread thinner than lotions, which makes a light mineral sunscreen easier to wear every day. The actives box lists 12% zinc oxide. The inactive list is printed alphabetically, as the federal rule requires for an over-the-counter drug that is not also sold as a cosmetic (21 CFR 201.66), so it tells you what is in it but not how much: allantoin and bisabolol open it only because of the alphabet.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Face Drops SPF 50

Why we picked it: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50
Two mineral filters rather than one: 5% zinc oxide and 6% titanium dioxide. The base leans on light solvents and silicones, with silica and talc to absorb oil. Allure picks La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios 50 Mineral, with the same 5% zinc oxide and 6% titanium dioxide, as its best drugstore mineral sunscreen (September 2026).
Flaws but not dealbreakers: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50
- Less zinc oxide than the other picks.
- Talc, if you avoid it.

Good for: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50
- Dark spots and melasma: the tint blocks visible light
- Skin tones that show white cast
- Reapplying over makeup
Skip it if: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50
- You want an untinted sunscreen
- A tight budget
Why we picked it: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50
A tint is not just cosmetic. The AAD says tinted sunscreens contain iron oxide, which helps protect against visible light, and visible light can worsen dark spots; a 2021 review (co-written by a researcher from ISDIN, a sunscreen maker) adds that untinted sunscreens do not adequately block it. The tint also hides the white of zinc oxide. This balm lists 12.5% zinc oxide with no water at all, and squalane and jojoba esters for slip.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50
- Shade matching matters.
- Pricier than drugstore picks.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen: what the difference really is
The difference is the active ingredients. If they are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both, it is a mineral (physical) sunscreen; anything else is a chemical sunscreen, and a mix is a hybrid (AAD). Dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin, and for pregnancy a dermatologist quoted by the AAD suggests them to avoid irritation.
On safety, the FDA has proposed recognizing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as safe and effective and asked for more data on 12 chemical filters; in 2026 it added one new chemical filter, bemotrizinol, and removed two old ones, PABA and trolamine salicylate. An FDA study found six chemical filters absorbed into the blood above the level that triggers more safety testing, but its authors said that does not mean people should stop using sunscreen. Our Learn guide to sunscreen filters covers each filter.
How to read a sunscreen label
A sunscreen is an over-the-counter drug, so its label works differently from a serum’s. The Drug Facts box lists each active ingredient with its percentage; the inactive ingredients follow, and a sunscreen that is not also sold as a cosmetic must list them alphabetically (21 CFR 201.66). That is why our cards give each filter’s printed percentage but only say whether fragrance or alcohol is there, never where. What to check, in order:
- Only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide under Active ingredients. Anything else there (avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate and others) makes it a hybrid. 20 of the 256 sunscreens in our catalog with “mineral”, “physical” or “zinc” in the name also list a chemical filter.
- Broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher. The AAD recommends both; the FDA advises SPF 15 or higher.
- Water resistant, if you will sweat or swim. Labels must say 40 or 80 minutes; nothing is waterproof (FDA).
- Tinted, for dark spots or white cast. Look for iron oxides. 53% of mineral-only sunscreens in our catalog are tinted.
- No fragrance. 73 of 546 mineral-only sunscreens in our catalog list it. None of our picks does.
One more thing Reddit users debate: many mineral sunscreens also list butyloctyl salicylate, a solvent chemically related to the filter octisalate (both are salicylate esters). It is not a UV filter under US rules, so it never appears in the actives box; a Reddit user in the mineral thread argues it behaves like one.
How to use a mineral sunscreen
- Last step of your morning routine, after moisturizer.
- At least a teaspoon for the face, about the length of your index and middle fingers (AAD).
- 15 minutes before going out, on dry skin.
- Reapply about every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
- Every day, even when cloudy.
Pair it with a morning vitamin C serum underneath, and a face moisturizer if your sunscreen is not one.
How we picked, and why you can trust it
We started from the mineral-only sunscreens in Avina’s catalog, added the ones Allure, other review sites and Reddit users recommend most, and read each Drug Facts box and ingredient list: every UV filter and its printed percentage, the SPF, tint, fragrance and scented extracts, and drying alcohol. We kept only sunscreens whose actives are zinc oxide or titanium dioxide alone, with no fragrance and no drying alcohol, then chose across skin types and budgets.
- Every fact on a product card is read from its label and generated from it, not typed by hand.
- Every health claim links to its source, such as the AAD, the FDA, a Drug Facts label or a published study.
- No brand pays, sends free products or buys ads to be on a list, and commission never decides a pick.
- We did not test these on skin or run a panel, and we say so on every post.
Our full method explains what we check and why.

Questions people ask
What is the best mineral sunscreen for the face?
Avène Mineral Multi-Defense Fluid SPF 50+: 12% zinc oxide as its only filter, SPF 50+, and no fragrance or drying alcohol. For sensitive skin, Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30; at the drugstore, Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50.
Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical sunscreen?
For sensitive skin, often yes: dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin, according to the AAD. The FDA has proposed recognizing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as safe and effective and asked for more data on 12 chemical filters. That is not proof chemical filters are unsafe: an FDA study found six of them absorbed into the blood, and its authors said people should not stop using sunscreen. The best sunscreen is the one you will wear every day.
Which mineral sunscreen leaves no white cast?
A tinted one. Iron oxides color the zinc oxide to match skin and block visible light too. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50 is our tinted pick; lighter fluids like Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Face Drops SPF 50 leave less cast than thick lotions.
What is the best mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin?
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer SPF 30: 19.5% zinc oxide in a fragrance-free moisturizer with ceramides. The AAD says dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin.
Is Beauty of Joseon sunscreen mineral?
It depends which. The famous Relief Sun is not: its label lists bemotrizinol, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, drometrizole trisiloxane and ecamsule, all chemical filters, and no zinc oxide. Beauty of Joseon's Daily Tinted Fluid lists zinc oxide as its only filter, so it is mineral, though it also lists alcohol denat.
Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?
No. It is a hybrid: its actives are 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate, and octinoxate is a chemical filter.
How much zinc oxide should a mineral sunscreen have?
There is no magic number: the SPF on the label is what the product was tested to give, and that is what to compare. Our picks list from 5% zinc oxide (with titanium dioxide) to 21.6%.
How much mineral sunscreen should I put on my face?
At least a teaspoon, about the length of your index and middle fingers, according to the AAD. Apply it 15 minutes before going out and reapply about every two hours outdoors, or after swimming or sweating.
Is mineral sunscreen safe during pregnancy?
A dermatologist quoted by the AAD suggests a physical sunscreen with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both during pregnancy, to avoid skin irritation. Ask your clinician about any product you are unsure of.
Why do US sunscreen ingredient lists look alphabetical?
Because they often are. Sunscreens are over-the-counter drugs, and the federal labeling rule requires a drug that is not also sold as a cosmetic to list its inactive ingredients in alphabetical order; one that is also a cosmetic lists them by amount. So on a sunscreen, the order of the inactive ingredients may say nothing about how much of each is inside; only the active ingredients carry percentages.
