The short answer
- The best tinted sunscreen, and the best tinted mineral one, is Tower 28 SunnyDays: zinc oxide only, 17 shades and no fragrance.
- For dark spots and melasma, Colorescience Face Shield Flex: SPF 50, water resistant, iron oxides.
- At the drugstore, CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sheer Tint; for dark skin, Supergoop! Protec(tint).
- Use at least a teaspoon for the face; if that looks heavy, put an untinted sunscreen on first and the tint on top.
- Every pick lists iron oxides, which help against visible light, and no fragrance. No US label rates visible-light protection.
How we chose: we read the US Drug Facts labels of the tinted sunscreens that 18 guides and store pages (ten from Google’s first page) and 22 Reddit threads recommend most, for those Avina’s catalog carries, mostly on DailyMed, the National Library of Medicine’s database of FDA labels. We kept those with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher, iron oxides, no fragrance and no drying alcohol. We did not test them on skin. Our method
of tinted sunscreens in Avina’s catalog whose ingredient list names a chemical filter list fragrance, against 14% of those that name only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. None of our picks lists fragrance.

Why we picked it: Tower 28 SunnyDays Tinted SPF 30
A mineral sunscreen with a real shade range: zinc oxide is the only active, and the tint comes from iron oxides, listed under “May contain” because the mix changes by shade. Its carton carries the National Eczema Association’s seal. Allure lists it with homosalate and octisalate; every US label since 2021 prints zinc oxide alone (DailyMed).
Ten of the 18 guides and store pages we read for “best tinted sunscreen” name it, more than any other tinted sunscreen, and across the 22 Reddit threads we read, 27 users recommended it, with none mentioning it only to complain (one of those threads).
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Tower 28 SunnyDays Tinted SPF 30
- SPF 30, the AAD's minimum.

Why we picked it: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50
The AAD's melasma advice asks for four things: broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water resistance, and a tint with iron oxide. Two of our picks meet all four, and this one does it at SPF 50. Visible light worsens melasma, especially in darker skin, the AAD says; broad-spectrum filters do not adequately protect against it, and the pigments in a tint do (Lyons 2021).
Colorescience was the brand Reddit users recommended most across the 22 threads we read. The flaw they named most often for this one was a shade that ran too dark (six people), just ahead of its price (five), so check the match.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50
- Lists mica, a shimmer pigment.

Why we picked it: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Face Sheer Tint
A mineral tint at a drugstore price, in Light, Medium and Deep. CeraVe’s US labels changed in December 2024: the current list no longer has salicylic acid, an exfoliating acid, though capryloyl salicylic acid, which the old list also carried, is still near the end (DailyMed). CeraVe’s website still shows the old list.
It also carries the ceramides, cholesterol and niacinamide of CeraVe’s moisturizers, and it is our tinted pick among mineral sunscreens too.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Face Sheer Tint

Why we picked it: EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
EltaMD sells it for skin prone to acne and rosacea, and its carton says non-comedogenic. Niacinamide sits third of 19 (EltaMD states 5% niacinamide). It is a hybrid, not a mineral sunscreen: the Drug Facts box lists zinc oxide and octinoxate, though some guides call it mineral.
Lactic acid is on the list too, 17th of 19. The Deep Tinted version has the same two actives.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Supergoop labels it a tinted mattifying face sunscreen. The first two entries are dimethicone and dimethicone crosspolymer, a silicone base, with silica further down.

Why we picked it: Saie Slip Tint Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35
A tinted moisturizer that is also a labeled sunscreen: the Drug Facts box lists zinc oxide alone. Plant oils come early on the list, with glycerin and two forms of hyaluronic acid further down.
The current US label dropped mica, which Saie’s website still lists. Saie is Leaping Bunny certified.

Read from the US Drug Facts label on DailyMed on October 3, 2026. US sunscreens print each UV filter’s percentage; their other ingredients may be listed alphabetically, so these label facts report only whether something is there. Formulas change; check your box. Why we picked it: Neutrogena Purescreen+ Mineral UV Tint Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 30
The longest water resistance on the label among our picks, and the most zinc oxide. The list is short, 21 ingredients, with no plant extracts at all; the directions say to shake it first.
In the deep-skin threads we read, Reddit users named it as often as any tinted sunscreen.

What does tinted sunscreen do? Iron oxides and visible light
Sunlight is not only UV. Visible light, the part you see, also darkens skin, and the AAD says it can increase hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones. In a lamp study it darkened brown to dark skin (types IV to VI) more deeply and for longer than long-wave UVA light did, and did not darken light skin (type II) (Mahmoud 2010).
Broad-spectrum filters do not adequately protect against it, and neither do the nano-sized mineral filters that rub in clear: for a sunscreen to protect against visible light, it has to be visible on the skin (Lyons 2021). That is the job of iron oxides, the pigments that give a tinted sunscreen its color. They are color additives, not UV filters (21 CFR 73.1200), and the FDA’s SPF and Broad Spectrum tests, which measure UV only, say nothing about visible light (21 CFR 201.327).
The evidence is real but small. In people with melasma, an iron oxide sunscreen added to hydroquinone improved results more than a UV-only one (Castanedo-Cázares 2014), and over a summer a tinted sunscreen evened out skin color better than an untinted one, though melasma scores improved about equally with both (Polena 2025). The trials are small, and several were run with sunscreen makers. More pigment is not clearly better: in one test a product with 1% iron oxides beat one with 4% (Ezekwe 2024), and no brand among 31 checked publishes how much it uses (Doan 2026).
Is it a tinted mineral sunscreen? Read the Active ingredients box
A tinted sunscreen can be either. The Drug Facts box lists every UV filter with its percentage: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide alone means mineral; anything else, such as octinoxate or homosalate, is a chemical filter. Seven of our picks are mineral. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted and Supergoop! Protec(tint) are hybrids, and big guides get both wrong: some call EltaMD’s mineral, and Glamour lists Protec(tint) as zinc oxide only. Our guide to mineral and chemical filters explains the difference.
The FDA has proposed recognizing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as safe and effective, and asked for more data on twelve chemical filters, octinoxate, homosalate and octisalate among them; it says that is not a finding that they are unsafe.
Shades, and tinted sunscreen for dark and deep skin tones
The AAD says to match both skin tone and undertone, and that people with darker skin should consider a tinted sunscreen. “Universal” tints rarely work at the ends of the range: of seven tested, only one matched the darkest skin (types V and VI) well (Bardhi 2024). In the deep-skin threads we read, the common complaints were ashy or grey casts, tints that run orange, and transfer onto collars. The shades each brand listed on October 3, 2026:
- Tower 28 SunnyDays: 17 shades; deepest 70 Venice (rich, neutral).
- Colorescience Face Shield Flex: 6 shades; deepest Rich Deep.
- CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sheer Tint: 3 shades; deepest Deep.
- EltaMD UV Clear Tinted: 2 shades; deepest Deep Tinted, which EltaMD says it designed and tested on deeper skin tones.
- Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen: 3 shades; deepest Sunset (deep skin tones), plus an Untinted version with no iron oxides.
- Saie Slip Tint: 14 shades; deepest Ten (rich, neutral).
- Supergoop! Protec(tint): 14 shades; deepest 58W (very deep, warm), with 52N (very deep, neutral).
- ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint: 30 shades; deepest Lovina ST19.
- Neutrogena Purescreen+: 4 shades; deepest Deep.
Five of our picks list their iron oxides under “May contain”, because each shade mixes them differently. If no shade matches, an untinted sunscreen that rubs in clear still protects you from UV.
How to apply tinted sunscreen, and the cakey problem
- At least a teaspoon for the face, about enough to cover the length of your index and middle fingers, as the AAD advises; it says many people put on only 20% to 50% of the amount the SPF is tested at.
- If that looks heavy, as many Reddit users find with a pigmented formula, put an untinted sunscreen on first and the tint on top, rather than using less.
- Reapply at least every two hours, and more often if you swim or sweat (FDA).
- Do not count on makeup with SPF alone; the Skin Cancer Foundation’s dermatologists caution against it.
What to check on a tinted sunscreen label: six things
- Broad Spectrum, SPF 30 or higher. What the AAD asks for. SPF mainly measures UVB; “Broad Spectrum” adds UVA (FDA).
- Iron oxides under Inactive ingredients. That is where the AAD says to look. They may sit under “May contain (+/-)”, because the pigment changes by shade, or as CI 77491, CI 77492 and CI 77499.
- The Active ingredients box for mineral or not. Only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide there means mineral. Titanium dioxide in the inactive list is there as a white pigment and does not count as a UV filter on the label.
- Water resistant (40 or 80 minutes), if you sweat or swim. The label must say which; nothing is allowed to say waterproof (21 CFR 201.327). Only two of our picks are.
- No fragrance. Look for the word in the inactive list; none of our picks has it.
- No visible-light rating to look for. No US label rates visible-light protection, and there is no standard test for it (Skin Cancer Foundation). “Blue light” claims are the brand’s.
How we picked, and why you can trust it
We read the tinted sunscreens recommended by 18 guides and store pages for “best tinted sunscreen”, ten of them on Google’s first page, among them Allure, InStyle, Glamour and Byrdie, and by Reddit users in 22 threads. Then we read the current US Drug Facts label of the most-named ones in Avina’s catalog, mostly on DailyMed: the actives and their percentages, the SPF, water resistance, iron oxides, fragrance and drying alcohol. Several labels had changed since the brands’ own pages were written, and we used the label. We kept products with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher, iron oxides, no fragrance and no drying alcohol, then chose one for each skin type and need. Some products readers ask about, such as e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint and DRMTLGY’s tinted moisturizer, are not in Avina’s catalog yet. Shade counts come from each brand’s US page. Cruelty-free status comes from the Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International directories, checked on October 3, 2026. For untinted options, see our mineral sunscreen picks.
- Every ingredient position, count and fragrance or alcohol flag on a product card is generated from its US ingredient list, not typed by hand.
- Every health claim links to its source, such as the AAD, the FDA, a Drug Facts label or a published study.
- No brand pays, sends free products or buys ads to be on a list, and commission never decides a pick.
- We did not test these on skin or run a panel, and we say so on every post.

Also considered

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral Light Fluid SPF 40
It passes our label checks, but “Anthelios tinted” is two products under one name: the Medium, Medium Deep and Deep SPF 40 fluids list 8% zinc oxide and 17% titanium dioxide, each with its own inactive list, and the SPF 50 “Tinted” is a titanium dioxide formula in one shade. Check the SPF on the box before you buy.

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral SPF 50
Named by five of the 18 pages we read, but its US label lists fragrance and alcohol denat., and so does ISDIN’s newer titanium dioxide version.

Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 40
More shimmer than tint: Sunrise lists bismuth oxychloride and mica well before iron oxides. Its filters are chemical only (avobenzone, octisalate and octocrylene in Sunrise), and each of its four shades is a separate label.

EltaMD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41
9% zinc oxide and 7% titanium dioxide, water resistant for 40 minutes and fragrance-free, but in one lightly tinted shade. A strong pick if it matches you.

Australian Gold Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50, Tinted
The tinted sunscreen Reddit users recommended most in our count, SPF 50 and water resistant for 80 minutes. Most of that praise is for the Botanical version, which Australian Gold’s US site no longer lists; the current tube lists a different formula.

Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF 30
Picked by InStyle and Byrdie, but alcohol denat. is on its list.
Questions people ask
What is the best tinted sunscreen?
Tower 28 SunnyDays: 12.6% zinc oxide as the only filter, 17 shades and no fragrance. For dark spots and melasma, Colorescience Face Shield Flex; at the drugstore, CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sheer Tint.
What is the best tinted mineral sunscreen?
Tower 28 SunnyDays: 12.6% zinc oxide as its only filter, 17 shades, no fragrance. For SPF 50 and water resistance, Colorescience Face Shield Flex; for 80 minutes in water, Neutrogena Purescreen+. Seven of our nine picks are mineral only: the Active ingredients box lists zinc oxide or titanium dioxide alone.
What is tinted sunscreen?
A sunscreen with pigments added, almost always iron oxides, so it has color. The AAD says tinted sunscreens contain iron oxide, which helps protect against visible light from the sun, and that a tint matching your skin can help you avoid the white cast some sunscreens leave. Iron oxides are color additives, not UV filters, so they are listed under inactive ingredients.
Is tinted sunscreen better than regular sunscreen?
For UV, no: the SPF and Broad Spectrum on the label are what count, tinted or not. What a tint adds is protection against visible light, which broad-spectrum filters do not adequately block. That matters most if you have melasma, dark spots or brown to dark skin: in a lamp study, visible light darkened skin types IV to VI but not light skin.
Is tinted sunscreen makeup? Can it replace foundation?
No: it is a sunscreen, which the FDA regulates as a drug, with color added. It can stand in for light coverage, but for the SPF on the label you need at least a teaspoon on the face, which can look heavy in a pigmented formula. If it does, put an untinted sunscreen on first and the tint over it. The Skin Cancer Foundation's dermatologists caution against relying on makeup with SPF alone.
What tinted sunscreen do dermatologists recommend?
The AAD does not name brands. It advises a broad-spectrum, water-resistant tinted sunscreen with iron oxide and SPF 30 or higher, especially for darker skin and melasma. Of our picks, Colorescience Face Shield Flex and Neutrogena Purescreen+ meet all four.
Does tinted sunscreen help with melasma?
The AAD advises a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum and water resistant for melasma, and calls sun protection one of the most common melasma treatments. The trials are small: alongside hydroquinone, an iron oxide sunscreen improved melasma more than a UV-only one, and over a summer, used alone, a tinted sunscreen evened skin color better than an untinted one, though melasma scores improved about equally with both.
What is the best tinted sunscreen for dark skin?
Supergoop! Protec(tint): its 14 shades go down to two Supergoop calls very deep. In the deep-skin Reddit threads we read, users named Neutrogena Purescreen+ and Tower 28 SunnyDays as often as any tinted sunscreen. Avoid relying on a universal tint: in one study, only one of seven matched the darkest skin (types V and VI) well.
Does tinted sunscreen cause acne or clog pores?
If you have oily skin, the AAD suggests a non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) formula. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted, our acne-prone pick, says non-comedogenic on its carton, as does Colorescience Face Shield Flex; for oily skin, Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen.
What is a good tinted sunscreen for mature skin?
One with a moisturizing base: Saie Slip Tint lists grape seed and argan oils early on, and ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint lists squalane second.
How do I know if a sunscreen has iron oxides?
Read the inactive ingredients. The AAD says iron oxide is listed there, because it protects against visible light rather than UV. Look for iron oxides, or the color numbers CI 77491, CI 77492 and CI 77499, sometimes after the words May contain.
Does tinted sunscreen stain clothes?
It can. Neutrogena Purescreen+'s label warns it may stain some fabrics, and transfer onto collars was a common complaint in the deep-skin Reddit threads we read.
Is a tinted moisturizer, skin tint or BB cream with SPF a sunscreen?
It is if its label has a Drug Facts box: in the US, a product sold with an SPF is regulated as a sunscreen drug, whatever it is called. Saie Slip Tint is sold as a tinted moisturizer, and Supergoop! Protec(tint) and ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint as skin tints; all three carry one. For everyday use, the AAD asks for Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
