The short answer

How we chose: we read the tinted moisturizers that 17 guides on Google’s first pages and four store pages recommend, and 28 Reddit threads, then read each candidate’s current US label: the Drug Facts on DailyMed, or the brand’s US page where DailyMed has none. We kept those with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher, iron oxides, no fragrance and no drying alcohol. We did not test them on skin. Our method

23%

of the tinted moisturizers, skin tints and BB or CC creams in Avina’s catalog with an SPF in their name have one below 30, the AAD’s minimum. Every one of our picks is Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Avina catalog, 125 products whose name says tinted moisturizer, skin tint, tinted hydrator, BB or CC cream or beauty balm, 93 of them with an SPF in the name, measured 2026-11-03. A record is a catalog product, and some are older formulas.

Why we picked it: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy SPF 30

Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer is the line the guides we read pick most: six of the 17 editorial pages on Google’s first pages name a version of it, three of them this Natural Dewy, and it was on all four store pages we read on November 3, 2026 (Sephora, Ulta, Amazon and Bluemercury). Glycerin is sixth on the list, with hyaluronic acid as sodium hyaluronate further down.

It is not the formula many reviews describe. Natural Dewy replaced Natural Skin Perfector in late 2024 with different UV filters, and DailyMed still holds only the old label, so we read the list on Laura Mercier’s US page. The four deepest shades drop mica and add a black pigment.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy SPF 30

  • Hybrid filters, not mineral only.
  • Mica in 16 of 20 shades.
  • SPF 30, the AAD's minimum.

Cruelty-free certification: the Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International directories on November 3, 2026.

Why we picked it: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer Mineral SPF 30

bareMinerals reworked it in late 2025: titanium dioxide went from 6.2% to 6.9% on a new base. DailyMed still has the older label, so we read bareMinerals’ US page, and stores may still sell the old tube.

In the 28 Reddit threads we read, 60 of the 72 people who mentioned it recommended it, most of them before this rework, and two said the formula had changed over the years (an r/30PlusSkinCare thread from 2024).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer Mineral SPF 30

  • SPF 30.

Why we picked it: e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint Mineral SPF 50

The highest SPF among our picks, and the only one whose label says water resistant. Zinc oxide is its only UV filter, and the tint is iron oxides, so it is a mineral sunscreen as well as a tint.

The glow is calcium sodium borosilicate, glass-based shimmer particles listed high in most of its 18 shades. e.l.f. is Leaping Bunny certified.

Why we picked it: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte SPF 30

Laura Mercier’s oil-free version, with mineral filters only. Silica is third on the list, with kaolin and bamboo stem powder, powders used to soak up oil.

Laura Mercier calls it oil-free and non-comedogenic, the two words the AAD suggests looking for on products for oily skin, though no rule defines either (Boozalis 2018).

Why we picked it: Cetaphil Redness Relieving Daily Facial Tinted Moisturizer SPF 40

The carton says fragrance free, hypoallergenic and won’t clog pores. The tint pairs iron oxides with chromium oxide greens, a green pigment that tones down the look of red.

Its inactive list is alphabetical, so it says nothing about amounts; allantoin, caffeine and dipotassium glycyrrhizate, from licorice, are on it.

Petrolatum, one of the ingredients the AAD names for dry skin, comes right after water, with dimethicone and sodium hyaluronate further down. The carton says fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.

Why we picked it: Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer SPF 45

For skin over 50, the AAD suggests a cream-based moisturizer, and for dry skin it points to ceramides and hyaluronic acid. No other pick lists a ceramide; this one lists five, with cholesterol and sodium hyaluronate.

DailyMed has no label for it, so we read Peter Thomas Roth’s US page. Its “30% hyaluronic acid complex” is the brand’s blend; sodium hyaluronate itself sits 18th on the list.

Why we picked it: DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46

Niacinamide comes right after water and a silicone. In 18 people, a 5% niacinamide moisturizer reduced hyperpigmentation more than the same moisturizer without it after four weeks, in a Procter & Gamble trial (Hakozaki 2002); DRMTLGY prints no percentage. It was the top seller in Amazon’s tinted moisturizer category when we looked on November 3, 2026.

One shade is the trade-off: of seven universal tints tested, only one matched the darkest skin (types V and VI) well (Bardhi 2024). In the Reddit threads we read, 47 of the 65 people who mentioned this one recommended it; irritation or stinging, too little coverage and its smell were the most-named complaints, three people each (an r/30PlusSkinCare thread).

Why we picked it: IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Natural Matte SPF 40

IT’s best-known CC+ Cream, the SPF 50+ one, lists seven essential oils in its classic shades, among them lemon, bergamot and eucalyptus, though never the word fragrance; its nine tan-to-deep shades are a different formula, with chemical filters and alcohol. This Natural Matte version lists neither.

Dimethicone is second on the list, with silica, a matte base; the mica it lists is synthetic (synthetic fluorphlogopite).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Natural Matte SPF 40

  • More makeup than moisturizer.
  • Synthetic mica.

What is a tinted moisturizer? Skin tints, BB and CC creams

A moisturizer with pigment, mostly iron oxides and titanium dioxide, for a sheer wash of color. Skin tint, BB cream and CC cream are the brands’ names for close relatives; our full-coverage pick is a CC cream and our shade-range pick calls itself a skin tint. The name does not tell you what matters most, which is whether it is also a sunscreen.

A tint sold with a sun-protection claim is a sunscreen drug as well as makeup (FDA), so its label carries a Drug Facts box (FDA) that lists each UV filter with its percentage (21 CFR 201.66). A tint with no such claim is a cosmetic, even if zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is on the list: there they can be pigments, used for color (21 CFR 700.35). A tint that is mainly a sunscreen is a tinted sunscreen; we compare those in our tinted sunscreen picks.

Is the SPF in a tinted moisturizer enough?

You get the SPF on the label only if you put on as much as you would of sunscreen. The SPF is measured at 2 mg of product per square centimeter of skin, and protection falls off steeply below that: with an SPF 4 sunscreen on volunteers’ backs, a quarter of the amount gave about the fourth root of the labeled SPF (Faurschou 2007).

People likely use much less of a tint than that. No study we found weighed it, but in a cosmetics-industry survey, US women used a median 0.36 g of liquid foundation per application (Loretz 2006), a fraction of the teaspoon the AAD advises for the face. And in a UV-camera study, people missed more of their face with an SPF moisturizer than with sunscreen, 16.6% against 11.1%, the gap mostly on the eyelids (Lourenco 2019). No study we found measured what SPF a tinted moisturizer gives at the amount people really wear.

The AAD says a moisturizer with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is fine for daily use, but for time outdoors advises a water-resistant sunscreen, reapplied every two hours. A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist suggests an SPF 30 sunscreen under makeup with SPF and says the two add up; a dermatologist writing for the Skin Cancer Foundation says layered SPFs do not add up, and starts with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 moisturizer, tinted or not, or a facial sunscreen.

The best tinted moisturizers without SPF

These three are cosmetics, with no Drug Facts box, so they are not sunscreens: wear an SPF 30 or higher under them. We read each brand’s US list; none has fragrance or drying alcohol.

The best tinted moisturizer for mature skin

For skin over 50, the AAD suggests a cream-based moisturizer, and for dry skin it points to ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Our pick, Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sheer Tint, is the only pick with ceramides, five of them, with cholesterol and glycerin. It comes in one sheer tint; if you need a closer match, Laura Mercier’s Natural Dewy lists glycerin and hyaluronic acid in 20 shades. A sheer tint is no substitute for a cream, so on dry, mature skin a moisturizer underneath helps; see our picks for dry skin. In the Reddit threads we read, 43 people said they put a moisturizer on before their tint, tinted sunscreen or foundation (an r/AskWomenOver60 thread).

Shades, and tinted moisturizer for deep skin tones

The AAD says to match both skin tone and undertone. Visible light darkens brown to dark skin more than light skin (Mahmoud 2010), which is when a well-matched tint helps most. “Universal” tints rarely suit the ends of the range: of seven tested, only one matched the darkest skin well (Bardhi 2024). The shades each brand listed on November 3, 2026:

  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy: 20 shades; deepest 7C Sable and 7N Mahogany.
  • bareMinerals Complexion Rescue: 20 shades; deepest Mahogany 11.5.
  • e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint: 18 shades; deepest the Rich trio, 16 Rich Cool, 17 Rich Warm and 18 Rich Neutral.
  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte: 20 shades; deepest 7C Sable and 7N Mahogany.
  • Cetaphil Redness Relieving Tinted Moisturizer: One neutral tint.
  • EltaMD UV Daily Tinted: 2 shades; deepest Deep Tinted, sold as its own bottle.
  • Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sheer Tint: One universal tint.
  • DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer: One universal shade.
  • IT Cosmetics CC+ Natural Matte: 28 shades; deepest Deep Mocha.
  • ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint: 30 shades; deepest Lovina ST19.

How to apply tinted moisturizer

  1. Skin care first. If you will be outdoors, put on a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, and wait a few minutes before the tint, as Cleveland Clinic suggests.
  2. If the tint is your only sunscreen, use as much as you would of sunscreen, at least a teaspoon for the face (AAD); if that looks heavy, layer instead.
  3. Check the match in daylight once it has set: liquid foundations can darken as they dry (Chen 2023).
  4. Reapply sun protection every two hours outside, and after swimming or sweating (AAD).

What to check on a tinted moisturizer label: five things

  • A Drug Facts box, and Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher on the front. A sun-protection claim makes a tint a sunscreen drug, so it must carry the box (FDA), and SPF 30 is the AAD’s minimum. In our catalog, 23% of the tints with an SPF in their name have one below 30.
  • No fragrance or essential oils in the inactive list. A claim on the pack is not the list: NARS’s label says synthetic-fragrance-free and lists fragrance, and most shades of IT’s CC+ SPF 50+ list citrus oils without the word.
  • The Active ingredients box, for mineral or not. Only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide there means mineral. Titanium dioxide in the inactive list is there as a white pigment, not as a labeled UV filter (21 CFR 700.35).
  • Water resistant (40 or 80 minutes), if you will sweat. The label must say which (21 CFR 201.327); only one of our picks does.
  • Iron oxides, for the tint. They help against visible light, which UV filters do not block well (Lyons 2021); they sit in the inactive list, often after “May contain”.

How we picked, and why you can trust it

We read the tinted moisturizers recommended by 17 guides on Google’s first pages for “best tinted moisturizer” and four related searches, among them Byrdie, Allure, InStyle and Glamour; on the Sephora, Ulta, Amazon and Bluemercury pages for the category on November 3, 2026; and in 2,926 comments across 28 Reddit threads. Then we read the current US label of the most-named ones: the Drug Facts on DailyMed, from the carton image where the typed text differed, or the brand’s US page for Laura Mercier, bareMinerals and Peter Thomas Roth, which have no current label there. Several had changed since the reviews were written. We kept products with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher, iron oxides, no fragrance and no drying alcohol, then chose one for each skin type and need. Shade counts and coverage words come from each brand’s US page. Cruelty-free status comes from the Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International directories: Cetaphil, EltaMD and ILIA on October 10, 2026, DRMTLGY on October 12, 2026 and Laura Mercier, bareMinerals, e.l.f., Peter Thomas Roth and IT Cosmetics on November 3, 2026.

  • Every ingredient position, count and fragrance or alcohol flag on a product card is generated from its US ingredient list, not typed by hand.
  • Every health claim links to its source, such as the AAD, the FDA, a Drug Facts label or a published study.
  • No brand pays, sends free products or buys ads to be on a list, and commission never decides a pick.
  • We did not test these on skin or run a panel, and we say so on every post.

Our full method explains what we check and why.

Questions people ask

What is the best tinted moisturizer?

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy: Broad Spectrum SPF 30, 20 shades and no fragrance, from the line the guides we read pick most. For mineral filters only, bareMinerals Complexion Rescue; at the drugstore, e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint.

What is the best tinted moisturizer with SPF?

All ten of our picks are Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher. The highest is e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint at SPF 50, also the only one water resistant (80 minutes); next come DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer (SPF 46) and Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sheer Tint (SPF 45).

What is the best skin tint?

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint for shade range (30 shades), and e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint at the drugstore: both are sold as skin tints with Broad Spectrum SPF and mineral filters. Without SPF, Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint.

What is a tinted moisturizer, and is it makeup?

A moisturizer with pigment, mostly iron oxides and titanium dioxide, for a sheer wash of color. Without an SPF it is a cosmetic, a kind of makeup. With an SPF it is also a sunscreen, which the FDA regulates as a drug, so the label carries a Drug Facts box listing the UV filters.

What is the difference between a tinted moisturizer, a skin tint, a BB cream and a CC cream?

They are the brands' names for close relatives, and the names follow no rule. What the label can tell you is whether it is a sunscreen (a Drug Facts box), which UV filters it uses, and whether fragrance is listed. Our full-coverage pick is a CC cream, IT Cosmetics CC+ Natural Matte; our shade-range pick calls itself a skin tint.

Is a tinted moisturizer better than foundation?

It gives less coverage, so it suits skin you want to even out rather than cover. If you want more coverage with an SPF, a CC cream such as our full-coverage pick sits in between. Whichever you wear, you get the SPF on the label only if it says Broad Spectrum and you apply enough of it.

Is the SPF in a tinted moisturizer enough?

You get the SPF on the label only if you put on as much as you would of sunscreen, at least a teaspoon for the face, and people likely use much less of a tint. The AAD says a moisturizer with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is fine for daily use, but for time outdoors it advises a water-resistant sunscreen, reapplied every two hours. A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist suggests a sunscreen under makeup with SPF.

What is the best tinted moisturizer for mature skin?

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Sheer Tint: SPF 45, with five ceramides, cholesterol, glycerin and hyaluronic acid. The AAD suggests a cream-based moisturizer for skin over 50 and points to ceramides and hyaluronic acid for dry skin. For more shade choice, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Natural Dewy (glycerin and hyaluronic acid, 20 shades).

What is the best drugstore tinted moisturizer?

e.l.f. Halo Glow Skin Tint: SPF 50, 12% zinc oxide as its only filter, water resistant for 80 minutes, 18 shades. For redness, Cetaphil Redness Relieving Tinted Moisturizer; without SPF, wet n wild's Bare Focus Tinted Hydrator.

What is the best tinted moisturizer for oily or acne-prone skin, and does it clog pores?

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blurred Matte: mineral SPF 30 with silica and kaolin, sold as oil-free and non-comedogenic. The AAD suggests both words for oily skin, but no rule defines them, so a product with the claim can still clog your pores; for more coverage, IT Cosmetics CC+ Natural Matte.

What is the best tinted moisturizer for dry skin?

EltaMD UV Daily Tinted, with petrolatum right after water and hyaluronic acid. bareMinerals Complexion Rescue, with squalane, is a mineral option.

What is the best tinted moisturizer for sensitive skin or redness?

Cetaphil Redness Relieving Tinted Moisturizer: mineral SPF 40, a green pigment that tones down redness, and a carton that says fragrance free and hypoallergenic. It comes in one neutral tint.

What is the best tinted moisturizer without SPF?

Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint, the no-SPF tint the guides we read pick most; at the drugstore, wet n wild Bare Focus Tinted Hydrator. Neither is a sunscreen, so wear one under it.

Does a tinted moisturizer protect against dark spots?

Its iron oxides help against visible light, which can darken skin, especially brown to dark skin, and which UV filters do not block well. That help is studied in tinted sunscreens, not in tints without an SPF, and no US label rates visible-light protection. For dark spots, the UV protection still has to come from a broad-spectrum SPF.

Why does my tinted moisturizer turn orange?

People call it oxidation. In a lab study of liquid foundations, not tints, test formulas darkened more the faster their volatile ingredients evaporated as they dried; the study did not test oxidation. Let it set before you judge the match.

How do I apply tinted moisturizer?

After your skin care and, if you will be outdoors, after a sunscreen; Cleveland Clinic suggests waiting a few minutes before makeup. If the tint is your only sunscreen, use as much as you would of sunscreen, and reapply every two hours outside.
