The newest evidence is worth knowing before you buy. A 2026 meta-analysis of 89 studies found that vitamin A products used on or around the eyes raised the odds of pain, dryness and burning. The risk was concentrated in prescription-strength retinoids; over-the-counter products were not significantly linked to harm, and the certainty of the evidence was low or very low. The takeaway is not to avoid eye retinoids, but to use ones made for the area, gently.
Keep a retinoid off the lids and the lash line, stop if your eyes feel gritty or dry, and do not borrow your face serum for the job. The Differin Drug Facts say plainly to keep adapalene away from the eyes; that applies to strong face retinoids generally.

Retinol is 9th of 29, fairly high for an eye cream, after glycerin and a few light emollients, with panthenol and vitamin E further down. Nothing on the list is there to scent it, and there is no alcohol denat.
It is a simple formula, which is what you want in the thinnest skin on your face. Expect slow, modest change, as with any eye retinoid: judge it after a few months, not a few weeks.

Is retinol safe around the eyes?
For most people, a formula made for the eye area, used a few nights a week, is fine. A 2026 meta-analysis found vitamin A products near the eyes raised the odds of dryness, burning and pain, mostly at prescription strength; over-the-counter products were not significantly linked to harm.
Can retinol cause dry eyes?
It can contribute. Vitamin A products near the eyes are linked to dryness and irritation, and prescription strength carries the most risk. If you have dry eye or meibomian gland problems, ask your eye doctor before using any retinoid near the eyes.
Can I use my regular retinol under my eyes?
Better not. Face serums are usually stronger and runnier than eye creams. Use a formula made for the eye area, keep it on the orbital bone, and leave it off the lids and lash line.
Does retinol eye cream help dark circles?
Mostly no. Retinoids target fine lines and texture. Dark circles come from pigment, visible blood vessels, shadowing and genetics, which a retinoid rarely changes much. Caffeine is often added for puffiness.
