The Best Night Creams

CeraVe's Skin Renewing Night Cream is our pick for most people: three ceramides, cholesterol, niacinamide and two peptides, with no fragrance. For retinol, Olay's Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer; for a strength printed on the tube, Avène's RetrinAL 0.1.

The short answer

How we chose: we read the ingredient lists of the night creams Google’s top guides and Reddit users recommend, checked each against its current US list (the brand’s, or a US retailer’s where the brand’s site could not be read), and compared the claims with the AAD, the FDA and the studies behind them. We did not test them on skin. Our method

51%

of the 276 night creams in Avina’s catalog list fragrance, against 35% of other face moisturizers. 135 list no retinoid, peptide or ceramide. None of our picks lists fragrance.

Why we picked it: CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream

CeraVe labels it “PM only” and says to use it nightly before bedtime. What does the moisturizing is the base: glycerin, shea butter and the barrier lipids ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol. The two peptides, tripeptide-1 and caprooyl tetrapeptide-3, come near the end of the list, and the evidence for peptides on skin is thin (see peptides).

It is Allure’s drugstore pick (September 2026), the number one seller among Amazon’s facial night creams (October 11, 2026). Of creams sold for night, it is the one Reddit users recommended most in the 48 threads we read (2023, 2026); their complaints: not rich enough for some, stinging for a few.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream

  • The peptides sit near the end of the list.
  • Some Reddit users find it not rich enough for very dry skin.

Why we picked it: Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer

Two retinoids high on a short list: retinol 6th and its ester retinyl propionate 7th, after water, dimethicone, glycerin, a starch and another silicone. Olay’s site now sells only the fragrance-free version, and Olay says to use it nightly with sunscreen the next morning. Good Housekeeping calls it its best value (August 2026).

Olay does not print a percentage, and US labels don’t have to (AAD). A 0.1% retinol product improved crow’s-feet lines over a year in a trial run by Johnson & Johnson (Randhawa 2015), so a low strength can work given time.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer

Why we picked it: Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream

Skin turns retinol into retinal, then retinal into retinoic acid, the form it uses, so retinal (retinaldehyde) skips a step. In a trial co-authored by Pierre Fabre’s research institute (Pierre Fabre makes Avène), 0.05% retinal reduced wrinkles in 125 people with sun-damaged skin at 18 weeks, as 0.05% prescription tretinoin did, with less irritation (Creidi 1998), and a review from Geneva rates it as probably the most effective retinoid sold without a prescription (Sorg 2006). This is the 0.1% version; Avène also makes a 0.05%, a pick in our retinol guide.

From the 13th entry (acacia senegal gum) the list is in A to Z order, which labels may do for ingredients at 1% or less, so retinal’s place (18th) says nothing about how much is in it. Good Housekeeping names it its best retinol (August 2026); Avène says to apply it in the evening.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream

Why we picked it: RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Rich Cream

RoC files it under night creams and sells it for skin after estrogen loss: dryness, firmness, deep wrinkles. The AAD says people in perimenopause and everyone 50 and older should use a cream-based moisturizer, and this one pairs retinol with ceramides AP, NP and EOP and cholesterol.

It is not RoC’s best-known night cream. That one, the Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, is InStyle’s, Byrdie’s and Vogue’s pick (May to September 2026; see what the guides miss), and it lists fragrance; the Rich Cream lists none. Allure’s mature-skin guide names the Rich Cream its best with retinol (September 2026).

Why we picked it: DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream

No pick lists more peptides: palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 15th, then four more by the 20th, set among the ceramides. DRMTLGY calls them a “5X Peptide Complex” and says the cream can be used night or day.

The honest catch is the evidence: a review of 19 trials found the effect on wrinkles came mostly from peptides taken by mouth, and the two skin trials showed a smaller effect that was not statistically significant (Nukaly 2026). The only certified cruelty-free brand among our picks (Leaping Bunny).

Why we picked it: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Night Moisturizer

La Roche-Posay tests it on allergy-prone, very sensitive skin and says to apply it every evening. The list is short and has no fragrance or essential oil, the ingredients that cause the most cosmetic allergies (Sukakul 2025); its one peptide, acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester, is near the end (22nd).

Tatcha calls it a fragrance-free “serum-in-moisturizer”, and the list bears that out: no fragrance, essential oil or named allergen. Its one-night barrier and redness results come from Tatcha’s own panel of 40 people. Allure names it best for sensitive skin (September 2026).

Reddit users recommend it often in the threads we read, and their main complaint is the price.

Why we picked it: Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

It isn’t sold as a night cream, but it is the cream Reddit users recommended most for night in the 48 threads we read, more than twice as often as any cream sold for night (favorite night slathers, heaviest night cream, both 2024). That is the point of this pick: a night cream is the moisturizer you wear to bed.

Petrolatum, 2nd, holds water in, and in human volunteers it sped up barrier repair (Ghadially 1992). The AAD says a cream or ointment suits dry skin best. It is also our pick for very dry, sensitive skin in our dry-skin guide.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

What makes a cream a night cream?

A night cream is a moisturizer sold for bedtime, often richer than a day cream and often the one with a retinoid. Nothing in US rules defines it: “night” appears in US regulations only as a category a company picks when it lists a product (21 CFR 720.4; FDA listing guidance), with no word on what it must contain. The one real line between day and night creams is sunscreen: a moisturizer with an SPF is an OTC drug as well as a cosmetic (FDA).

What a night cream may claim is narrower than its packaging suggests. Moisturizing is a cosmetic claim; removing wrinkles or raising collagen makes a product a drug (FDA). In 2012 the FDA warned Lancôme that its Génifique Repair Youth Activating Night Cream “boosts the activity of genes” claim made it a drug (FDA warning letter), and Avon over claims for its Anew Reversalist Night Renewal Cream (FDA warning letter); in 2014 L’Oréal settled FTC charges over Génifique’s gene claims (FTC).

Does skin repair itself at night?

Skin has a daily rhythm, but it doesn’t add up to “repairs while you sleep”. In 16 volunteers measured around the clock, water loss followed a daily cycle, and the authors concluded skin is more permeable in the evening and at night (Yosipovitch 1998), and skin cells divide most around midnight (Brown 1991). A Shiseido study points the other way: after the barrier was stripped with tape, it recovered most slowly between 8 and 11 p.m. (Denda 2000). The water loss is a fair reason for a richer cream at night; no study we found shows a cream works better because of the hour, except for retinoids.

Why retinoids go on at night

Light breaks them down. A tretinoin lotion under simulated light lost about 80% of its strength in 30 minutes (Brisaert 2000), and in a test of 12 skin-care products, light did more damage to their retinoids than heat (Temova Rakuša 2021). The prescription tretinoin cream approved for fine wrinkles is labeled for once a day in the evening (Renova label), and the AAD advises retinoids only at night, every other night to start, with sunscreen by day.

The evidence for over-the-counter forms is real but modest. A 0.4% retinol lotion improved fine wrinkles on the arms of people with an average age of 87 over 24 weeks (Kafi 2007), and a review from Geneva rates retinol and its esters as gentle but only modestly effective, retinal as probably the most effective (Sorg 2006). Avoid all of them in pregnancy, as ACOG and the AAD advise.

Peptides, niacinamide and other night-cream promises

90 of the night creams in our catalog list a peptide, more than list a retinoid (61), though peptides have far less evidence. Procter & Gamble’s trial of palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 found finer lines after 12 weeks on the side of the face that got it (Robinson 2005), but a 2026 review of 19 trials found the overall effect came mostly from peptides taken by mouth (Nukaly 2026). Niacinamide has a similar company trial behind it, at 5% (Bissett 2004); no pick prints its niacinamide strength.

The AAD sums up anti-aging creams as delivering modest results, and calls promises to look years younger overnight too good to be true. A moisturizer can plump fine lines within days; most other changes take at least six weeks, sometimes three months (AAD).

Popular night creams whose labels don’t match the guides

None of the guides we read prints the ingredient list. Four favorites show why it matters:

  • RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream: InStyle’s best for deep wrinkles (June 2026), Byrdie’s best with retinol (May 2026) and Vogue’s best for wrinkles (September 2026), where a dermatologist says it “contains a high concentration of retinol”. RoC prints no percentage; retinol is 13th of 41, and fragrance is 38th of 41, with glycolic acid.
  • Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Dream Face Cream: Byrdie’s best overall night cream, and in its aging-skin guide a cream that “doesn’t contain added fragrance” (May 2026). The US list has fragrance (29th of 40), lemon peel oil and the allergens limonene, linalool and citral.
  • philosophy Anti-Wrinkle Miracle Worker+ Line-Correcting Overnight Cream: Good Housekeeping’s best overall night cream, called fragrance-free (August 2026). The US list has fragrance (31st of 65).
  • ISDIN Isdinceutics Age Contour Night: “Fragrance-free: yes” in Allure’s mature-skin guide (September 2026), while Vogue (September 2026) says it has fragrance. The US list has fragrance (26th of 54) and alcohol denat. (16th).

How to use a night cream

  1. Wash your face before bed with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Retinoid first, if it is a separate product, 20 to 30 minutes after washing; if it dries you out, moisturize first and apply the retinoid after (AAD).
  3. Then the night cream, a thin layer over the face and neck, on skin that is still a little damp (AAD). Our skincare order guide has the full sequence.
  4. Very dry skin? Seal it with a thin layer of petrolatum, such as plain petroleum jelly or the CeraVe Healing Ointment from our dry-skin picks, but not on your face if you break out (AAD).
  5. A retinoid cream every other night at first, building up as your skin allows (AAD).
  6. Sunscreen the next morning, SPF 30 or higher, every day you use a retinoid.
  7. Give it at least six weeks before judging it, and up to three months (AAD).

What to check on a night cream label: six things

Cosmetic labels list ingredients by amount down to 1%, then in any order (21 CFR 701.3); our guide to reading an ingredient list explains the rest.

  • Fragrance and essential oils. 51% of the night creams in our catalog list fragrance. Look past the word too: lavender, rose or citrus oils and allergens like limonene and linalool are scent, whatever the front says.
  • Which retinoid, if any, and where. Retinol, retinal (retinaldehyde) or a retinyl ester such as retinyl palmitate or propionate. Few labels print a percentage, and none have to (AAD).
  • “Retinol alternative” is not a retinoid. The phrase can mean bakuchiol, an algae or grape extract, or peptides. Bakuchiol’s best-known head-to-head trial against retinol had 44 people (Dhaliwal 2019).
  • Peptides near the end. They usually come near the end of the list, in small amounts, and their evidence on skin is thin (Nukaly 2026).
  • No alcohol denat. near the top. Drying alcohol works against a cream meant to hold water overnight.
  • Drug claims on a cosmetic. “Regenerates cells” (FDA) or “boosts collagen” (FDA) are drug claims, and in 2012 the FDA warned Lancôme and Avon over claims for their night creams.

How we picked, and why you can trust it

We started from the night creams recommended by Google’s top results (Allure, InStyle, Byrdie, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, Forbes, the OSVI dermatology practice, NBC Select and others), Amazon’s bestselling night creams, and Reddit users in 48 night-cream threads, about 3,850 comments. We read each product’s current US ingredient list, about 100 in all, from the brand or, where its site could not be read, a US retailer, and kept only formulas with no fragrance, essential oils, named scent allergens or drying alcohol. We then chose one for each need, checking every claim against the AAD, the FDA and the studies linked below. Cruelty-free status comes from the Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International directories, checked on October 10, 2026. For a moisturizer for the daytime, see our face moisturizer picks; for a retinoid serum to wear under a night cream, our retinol picks.

  • Every ingredient position, count and fragrance or alcohol flag on a product card is generated from its US ingredient list, not typed by hand.
  • Every health claim links to its source, such as the AAD, the FDA, a Drug Facts label or a published study.
  • No brand pays, sends free products or buys ads to be on a list, and commission never decides a pick.
  • We did not test these on skin or run a panel, and we say so on every post.

Our full method explains what we check and why.

Questions people ask

What is the best night cream?

CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream for most people: a plain, fragrance-free barrier cream with three ceramides and cholesterol that also works over a retinoid serum. For retinol in the cream, Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer; for a printed strength, Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream.

What is the best night cream for aging skin?

One with a retinoid, the most proven ingredient for lines: Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer to start, Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream once your skin is used to retinol, or RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Rich Cream if your skin is also dry. Wear sunscreen every morning.

What is the best night cream for wrinkles?

A retinoid cream. Retinal, the retinoid in Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream, worked as well as low-strength prescription tretinoin on wrinkles in one 18-week trial of a 0.05% retinal cream, with less irritation. Give any of them at least six weeks; the AAD says some take up to three months.

Which night cream do dermatologists recommend?

The AAD does not rank brands. Its advice is about ingredients: apply a retinoid at night, start every other night, use sunscreen by day, and pick fragrance-free products if your skin is dry. Every pick here is fragrance-free; three carry a retinoid.

What is the best night cream for women over 50?

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Rich Cream: retinol with three ceramides and cholesterol in a rich cream. The AAD says everyone 50 and older should use a cream-based moisturizer. If retinol is too much, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.

What is the best night cream for a 40-year-old?

A retinoid at night has the most evidence for lines: Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer is an easy start, and CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream works over a separate retinoid serum. Neither lists fragrance.

What is the best drugstore night cream?

CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream. Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer, RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Rich Cream and Vanicream Moisturizing Cream are drugstore picks too.

What is the best Korean night cream?

For a retinoid, By Wishtrend Vitamin A-mazing Bakuchiol Night Cream, our Korean retinoid night cream pick. For plain moisture, Aestura Atobarrier365 Cream, our Korean moisturizer pick: it is not sold for night, but in the threads we read Reddit users recommended it for night about as often as CeraVe’s night cream. Neither lists fragrance; Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, the best-known Korean overnight product, does.

Do I need a night cream?

Not a special one. “Night” has no definition in US rules; it is only a category on FDA filings. Any moisturizer without sunscreen works at night, and a day cream with SPF does too, though the sunscreen is wasted. What earns a cream its place at night is a retinoid, which breaks down in light.

When should you start using a night cream?

At any age: a night cream is the moisturizer you wear to bed. For lines, the AAD’s advice for your 20s already covers retinol, so in your 30s a first retinol cream such as Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer is a reasonable start.

What ingredients should I look for in a night cream?

Three kinds, the same as the rows in each pick’s Label facts: something that draws in water (glycerin, hyaluronic acid), barrier lipids (ceramides, cholesterol) and something that seals water in (petrolatum, shea butter, squalane or a silicone). For lines, add a retinoid. Skip fragrance and drying alcohol.

What is the difference between a day cream and a night cream?

Usually sunscreen and texture: a day cream may carry SPF, which makes it an OTC drug as well as a cosmetic, while night creams tend to be richer and are where brands put retinoids. Nothing in the rules sets either apart.

Can I use a night cream during the day?

If it has no retinoid, yes, under sunscreen. If it has a retinoid, keep it for night: the AAD advises retinoids only at night, and light breaks them down.

Can I use a retinol night cream every night?

Not at first. The AAD says to start every other night and build up as your skin allows, with a moisturizer to limit irritation and sunscreen every morning.

Can I use a night cream with retinol while pregnant?

No: ACOG and the AAD advise avoiding retinoids, including over-the-counter retinol, in pregnancy. CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Night Moisturizer list no retinoid.

What is the best night cream for dry skin?

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Rich Cream if you want retinol, Vanicream Moisturizing Cream for plain moisture. For more, see our dry-skin picks.

What is the best night cream for sensitive skin?

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Night Moisturizer: 24 ingredients and no fragrance, tested by La Roche-Posay on allergy-prone skin.

What is the best night cream for oily, acne-prone skin?

A lotion rather than a cream: CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, from our oily-skin picks. The rich creams here may be too heavy: Vanicream calls its cream non-comedogenic, but clogged pores are the complaint Reddit users raise most about it.

Is CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream good for aging skin?

As a moisturizer, yes: three ceramides, cholesterol, niacinamide and no fragrance. It has no retinoid, so for lines pair it with a retinoid serum (see our retinol picks) or choose Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night Moisturizer instead.

Do night creams really work?

As moisturizers, yes: the AAD says a moisturizer can plump fine lines in a few days. Beyond that, results are modest and slow, at least six weeks and sometimes up to three months, and the ingredient with the best evidence is a retinoid. Claims to boost genes, regenerate cells or raise collagen are drug claims, and the FDA has warned night-cream makers over them.

Do peptides in night creams work?

The evidence is thin: in a 2026 review of 19 trials, the two trials of peptides on skin showed a smaller effect that was not statistically significant. More under peptides.

Does skin repair itself at night?

Skin follows a daily rhythm: in one study of 16 people it was more permeable in the evening and at night, but another found the barrier recovered slowest between 8 and 11 p.m. No study we found shows a cream works better at night, except that retinoids last longer out of the light. More under skin at night.

Is a sleeping mask the same as a night cream?

Close: an overnight mask is a moisturizer you leave on while you sleep. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, the best known, lists fragrance (24th of 43), and in the threads we read more Reddit users complained about it than recommended it, most often that it left them dry.

What is a retinol alternative?

Whatever a brand says it is. Bakuchiol, a plant compound, did about as well as 0.5% retinol in one 44-person trial. La Mer The Rejuvenating Night Cream and Cetaphil Healthy Renew Night Cream are sold as retinol alternatives and OSEA Dream Night Cream as “Bio-Retinol”, with no retinoid or bakuchiol on any of their lists.
